Microsclerotherapy For Visible Leg Veins

(Micro) sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to shut down unwanted veins by injecting a sclerosing chemical agent into the vein with the purpose of destroying the targeted veins. Sclerotherapy is the Gold standard for treating leg veins. A tiny needle is used, so it is not painful and works well for most patients. Both thread (red spider) and Reticular (blue) veins can be successfully treated. This is not a treatment for dilated (bulging) varicose veins.

Three to five sessions are normally required to successfully treat targeted veins. Treatments are given 4-6 weeks apart and treated veins usually respond in 3 to 6 months. It is therefore ideal to start this treatment during the winter months.

During sclerotherapy, mild discomfort may be felt for a couple minutes when veins are injected with a sclerosing agent. The sclerotherapy treatment itself usually takes approximately 30 minutes.

Veins that respond to sclerotherapy injection treatment will not usually reappear. However, new veins may appear over time. If clinically indicated, these veins may also be treated by injection sclerotherapy.

A full consultation and vascular assessment are completed before treatment. This treatment is not suitable for pregnant or breast-feeding women.
